Bridgend College is fully committed to the Welsh Government’s aspiration to achieve an Anti-racist Wales 2030. We want to be an anti-racist College, and are committed to fostering an inclusive culture where people are respectful, and where this permeates all that we do. We want to develop an anti-racist culture where people show up for one another with trust and integrity – a place of learning and work where people thrive and where people can be all that they can be.
As a place of education, we recognise our responsibility in developing the skills, knowledge and confidence of our students, staff and the communities we serve. We want to be a place of sanctuary, providing a sense of belonging.
As part of our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment, we are proud to be working towards becoming a College of Sanctuary. This initiative is about ensuring that our college is a place of safety, understanding, and opportunity for those seeking sanctuary, including refugees and asylum seekers.
A College of Sanctuary is more than just a title—it is a pledge to foster a culture of inclusivity, respect, and support for all. It means embedding sanctuary principles into our policies, curriculum, and everyday college life to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, feels valued and empowered to succeed. To strengthen this commitment, we are developing a College of Sanctuary Toolkit, and we believe that every member of our college community has an essential role to play in shaping it.

Whilst some actions already have embedded and established approaches in existence, many actions outlined within our anti-racism plan are longer-term ambitions as part of our on-going journey towards creating a truly anti-racist organisation which inspires and advances opportunities for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people within the College, our local community, nationally and internationally.
We want to be recognised, through genuine merit, for our work and support in advancing meaningful change and opportunity for anti-racism.

We are extremely proud to announce that Bridgend College has strengthened its stance against racism by signing up to the Zero Racism Wales policy. Zero Racism Wales calls on all organisations and individuals who are committed to promoting racial harmony and equity to sign up to their zero-tolerance policy to racism in Wales.
By signing this pledge (since 2021), we agree to seek to create, maintain and promote a community in which each person is treated fairly and equally, irrespective of race. Bridgend College confirms its commitment to enabling equality of opportunity in employment and service delivery.
We recognise the significant impact of trauma on individuals’ lives and understand that a compassionate and understanding approach is essential to support our students and staff on their academic and personal journeys. We do this by being calm, consistent and caring in our approach to communication and decision-making.

We are actively focusing on closing the ethnicity pay gap. More information is available in Bridgend College’s Pay Gap report.
