Bridgend College has been recognised for its leadership in digital innovation after being awarded âPremier Reference Institutionâ status as part of the Google for Education Reference Program. This recognition highlights the Collegeâs focus on developing practical digital solutions that improve access to learning and support for students.
College representatives recently attended the Google Reference Program Summit in Dublin, joining a global network of forward-thinking education providers to explore the latest developments in digital learning, AI and emerging technologies.
The summit brought together leading institutions from around the world to share best practice and explore how technology is shaping the future of education. As part of the programme, attendees gained insight into new and upcoming services from Google, alongside collaborative sessions with other Reference Institutions.
Bridgend College contributed to the programme by sharing examples of its work in digital learning. Digital Learning Coordinator, Colin Richards, took part in a panel discussion on Advancing Education with AI, focusing on how technology can support teaching and improve the learner experience.
A further session, Revolutionising Learner Support with an AI-powered portal, was delivered by Claire Flay-Petty, Interim Director of Quality, alongside Colin Richards. The presentation focused on the development of a new student portal at the College, designed in response to feedback from learners and staff.
Initial insight gathered through surveys and focus groups highlighted a number of challenges with the previous system, including multiple logins, limited mobile accessibility and difficulties accessing accurate, up-to-date information. In response, the College worked with its student digital ambassador network and staff teams to shape a solution that is more accessible, user-friendly and centred around learner needs.
Developed in-house, the new portal integrates AI technology, including Gemini models via Googleâs Vertex AI platform, to provide a more personalised experience. The platform allows learners to ask questions in their own words and receive instant, tailored support, helping them to navigate their studies more easily.
Speaking about the achievement, Scott Morgan, Director of Data and Digital Architecture at Bridgend College, said:
âBeing recognised as a Premier Reference Institution is a significant milestone for the College. It reflects the dedication of our staff to continuously improve the learning experience through innovation and collaboration, and we are proud to share our work on an international stage.â
The College will continue to build on this work, exploring new ways to enhance the learner experience through digital innovation.
