The College has marked a significant milestone in the construction of its £75m Town Centre Campus. Held on 20 October, the event was attended by members of the College’s Senior Leadership Team, Chair of the Governing Body, staff, students and the project team.
Topping Out is a ceremony that marks the structural completion of a building and takes place when the highest point of the building is reached. The event included a tour, led by Senior Operations Manager at Willmott Dixon, Tom Millard. Guests were able to see the significant progress that is being made at the site before moving to the upper floor of the 6-story development for the ceremonial exchange of a yew tree, which is historically a symbol of longevity and protection.
The 12,900 sqm development in Bridgend Town Centre will encompass two new buildings at Cheapside that will provide exceptional teaching and learning facilities, including a theatre, hair and beauty salons, recording and dance studios, design workshops, and more.
“It is great to be at our Town Centre Campus Topping Out Ceremony. It’s been an emotional day as it feels like a real milestone has been reached. The building has moved on significantly in the last couple of months, and we can really feel it all coming together. We are excited for when we can bring more people into the site to see just how incredible this building and space is going to be, not just for Bridgend College, but for the whole of Bridgend.”
Viv Buckley, Principal and CEO
The next phase of the build includes making the main structure weathertight by the end of the year, with the internal trades and the fit out of the building beginning in the new year.
