Bridgend College signs Zero Racism pledge

We are extremely proud to announce that Bridgend College has strengthened its stance against racism by signing up to the Zero Racism Wales policy.

Zero Racism Wales calls on all organisations and individuals who are committed to promoting racial harmony and equity to sign up to their zero-tolerance policy to racism in Wales.

By signing this pledge, we agree to seek to create, maintain and promote a community in which each person is treated fairly and equally, irrespective of race. Bridgend College confirms its commitment to enabling equality of opportunity in employment and service delivery.

Simon Pirotte, Principal and CEO of Bridgend College, said:

“Bridgend College’s mission is to enable all to “be all that they can be.” Signing the Zero Racism pledge reinforces our commitment to being an inclusive organisation. Now, more than ever, it is so important to do all we can to remove barriers, celebrate diversity and enable every individual to maximise their potential.”

Students have engaged with training workshops delivered by Show Racism the Red Card – the UK’s leading anti-racism educational charity, which utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to help tackle racism in society. Show Racism the Red Card Wales delivers anti-racism workshops in schools and colleges, encouraging young people to critically think about and challenge what they hear, and see, from outside sources such as the media. The College’s Student Ambassadors and StARs (Student Academic Representatives) have been invited to attend a training session to explore these themes and develop knowledge around recognising racism and how to respond appropriately to support others and themselves.

Our core citizenship expectations include being respectful and being safe and as a College, we are fully committed to this. We pledge to learn and educate to make a difference to the lives of all communities. In the summer of 2020, the College showed solidarity to those involved in the local Black Lives Matter peaceful protest and reaffirmed our commitment to advancing work to reduce racial inequality and microaggression within our college community.
