Digital Arts students from Bridgend College were selected to exhibit their work at Origins Creatives 2023, the annual celebration of student achievement run by the University of the Arts London (UAL).
Nia Balendez and Rowan Fry, who both studied the Level 3 Diploma in Digital Arts, Animations and Graphic Communication, were chosen to showcase their original animations alongside the works of other Further Education (FE) students from across the UK.
Origins Creatives was established by UAL and provides art lovers and industry professionals alike the opportunity to discover original creative talent from students across the UK.
The exhibition showcased the spectrum of creativity, bringing together works from Art and Design, Fashion Business and Retail, Creative Media, Music Performance and Production, and Performing Arts. All submissions were assessed by an independent curator based on their aesthetic impact, strength of concept and clarity of communication.
Both Bridgend College students submitted 2D animation short films which explore the theme of repetition through relatable aspects of the human experience. Out of over 500 submissions received by UAL, spanning the range of artistic expression, the two animations were selected to be displayed as part of the prestigious event.
Nia’s animation is centred on the universal experience of over-thinking and being overwhelmed by life’s responsibilities, resulting in stressors spilling over into the sleep state. The viewer is invited to interpret the character’s dreams in their own way, furthering the impact and reflective nature of the video.
Rowan’s submission addresses video game addictions. ‘Don’t Get Sucked In!’ creates a stark contrast between real life and the game world through the striking use of colour and movement. The film aptly illustrates the absorbing nature of gaming whilst highlighting the importance of being rooted in reality.
