‘Race to Zero’

Bridgend College joins the ‘Race to Zero’ campaign against climate change

We are proud to announce that we have joined the global Race to Zero campaign.

COP26 (Conference of the Parties) is the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference which will take place in Glasgow in November 2021. At the summit, delegates including Heads of State and negotiators will come together to agree co-ordinated action in tackling climate change.

Bridgend College is one of the organisations representing the education sector, and in preparation for the conference, we took the opportunity to be part of this key event by committing to going net-zero. By joining this Race to Zero campaign, we recognise that we are part of a healthy, resilient zero carbon recovery.

Globally, the ‘Race to Zero’ initiative includes over 600 Higher Education and Further Education institutions representing over 8 million students. It is a global campaign to rally leadership and support from businesses, cities, regions and the education sector. By supporting this, we show our support for a global commitment to achieving net zero, helping the planet to recover and to build a more sustainable future.

As outlined in the plan to achieve net zero, we are committed to increasing the delivery of environmental and sustainability education across curriculum, campus and community outreach programmes.

Chris Long, Health, Safety and Sustainable Development Manager at the College said,

“We are extremely proud to be the first college in Wales to have signed the Sustainable Development Goals Accord (SDG Accord) and declare a climate emergency. The climate and biodiversity crises are the greatest leadership challenges that we face but we have a clear ambition to lead and inspire others to become better global citizens and change-makers.”

Chris Long, Health, Safety and Sustainable Development Manager

The College has ambitious sustainability objectives, and has already reached and exceeded its ambition to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2025 as outlined in the College’s 2020-2015 Strategic Plan. This is the first phase towards achieving net zero no later than 2040.
