Sport and Physical Activity (Level 3)

You don’t have to be a top athlete or a one in a million who makes a professional team to get a job in sports. You can qualify as a sports coach, physiotherapist, personal trainer, nutritionist, a sports teacher and much more within this huge industry. We have industry experienced tutors in the sports department at Bridgend College along with state of the art facilities that create an innovative and vibrant learning environment.

Our Pencoed Campus facilities include a sports hall with a climbing wall, rugby and football pitches, a 3G pitch, strength and conditioning gym and fitness suite. You will be supported by a team of highly qualified staff who many have played to a professional level at their chosen sport.

Overview and modules

You will develop a range of skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for career development in sport specific employment. You will also get the opportunity to study towards nationally recognised coaching qualifications. Modules may include:

Sports massage
Sports injuries
Principles of anatomy and physiology
Fitness training
Sports nutrition
Sports coaching
Sports psychology
Exercise, health and lifestyle
Practical sports
Current issues in sport

You will also develop a number of skills including numeracy, literacy and digital skills throughout the course.

The formal qualification you will receive is an NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity

Sports Coaching: Rugby and Football Academy learners
Sport and Exercise Science : General sport learners

Your programme of study

At Bridgend College, your learning programme is designed to enable you to Be All That You Can Be.

The main qualification you will study as part of this programme is the NCFE Level 3 Diploma (540) in Sport and Physical Activity.

You will also study additional skills qualifications as part of your programme of study. There are 3 pathways. Each pathway will be selected at enrolment and will reflect your current course application, your chosen curriculum area, as well as your previous learning in Maths and English. You could study Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (equivalent to 1 A-Level), GCSE Maths or English, Advanced Studies, or at least one Essential Skills Qualification (ESW) course.

All students will receive tutorials and are required to complete an ESW Employability course in the Success Hub.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted, including a Merit at Level 2

Note, for entry to play in the Rugby Academy or Football Academy, you will be required to attend a trial and pre-season training.

Continue your studies

Successful completion of the first year will enable you to achieve the Level 3 90 Credit Diploma.

Progress to Year 2 to achieve the full Level 3 Extended Diploma Sport and Physical Activity

Upon successful completion of the Level 3 Extended Diploma you have the opportunity to progress to the FdSc in Sport.

Course-related fees

Fees related to this course are approximately Multi £140, Football £220, Rugby £220.
