Independent Living Skills (Part-time)

Our Independent Living Skills (ILS) Pathway courses aim to increase social interaction whilst offering accessible knowledge and practical training during fun and friendly sessions, in a safe learning environment. There is a range of subjects all of which work towards the four pillars of learning - Health and Wellbeing, Community, Independent living skills and Employability.

Overview and modules

There are different options you could choose from and you will be able to make choices after your initial application.

These include:

Music
You will listen to and learn about different music styles and create sounds of your own. You will also have fun taking part in discussions, quizzes and concerts.

Art and Design
Experimenting with different types of media, you will create a variety of themed artwork. You will have the opportunity to display the best of your work in an end-of-year exhibition.

Community and Independence
You will develop skills to enable you to be safe, independent and responsible within your community. You will be encouraged to take part in community events and access local community facilities.

Health and Wellbeing
Through classroom discussions and projects, you will increase your knowledge of healthier lifestyle choices. You will also have access to our College gym and be encouraged to explore local surroundings to increase your wellbeing.

Skills for Working in the Community

You will take part in a variety of activities to support you to apply for voluntary and paid opportunities in the community. You will have visits and guest speakers, and be supported to develop your CV and application skills.

Home cooking
Having access to professionally equipped kitchens, you will have fun creating a wide variety of tasty dishes that you will be able to take home and share with your friends and family. There is small fee each week for this.

Sport and nutrition

You will learn about nutrition and how to make healthy choices. You will also take part in a variety of sporting activities supported by our sport students to develop your physical skills.

Home and Leisure
Using our specially equipped house you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in caring for a home. You will also be able to access local areas and amenities to explore different ways to spend your leisure time.

Horticulture
You will learn how to grow; look after and use a wide variety of flowers and plants. You will also develop your ability to use tools and equipment to look after them and help keep a garden looking at its best the whole year round.

Performance and confidence building

This option helps you to develop skills in confidence through a variety of activities and class based tasks.

Digital Media

Using desk top computers and chromebooks you will develop your digital skills to live safely online.

Entry requirements

To apply for one of our ILS part time options you will need to have:

A genuine interest in the subject
A willingness and ability to participate in a range of practical activities both indoors and outdoors where necessary
A commitment to working hard and giving 100% effort
Access to suitable transport to get to the College
Agree to attend regularly and be on time for class activities

These courses are free to attend if you are registered disabled or have a learning difference. If you have personal care or supervision needs you will need to be accompanied by your own Personal Assistant (PA).

Assessment methods

You will have a mixture of classroom and off-site teaching and assessment.
