Historical Fashioncraft

This course is designed for individuals eager to delve into the world of textile creation, with a unique focus on historical fashion. You will gain comprehensive knowledge and practical skills necessary to conceptualize, design, and produce your very own textile project, drawing directly from historical periods and styles. From initial idea generation to the final finishing touches, this course will equip you with the expertise to bring your historically-inspired textile visions to life.

You will be required to provide the following materials and equipment to complete this course:

Sewing machine and sewing kit including needles, thread, bobbins, and snips
Fabric
Pattern paper
Pattern master (ruler)

Upon the completion of this unit, students will be awarded Textile Project Level 2 from Agored Cymru

Overview and modules

You'll learn to:

Understand and produce a textile project brief, emphasizing how historical research informs your project's scope.
Develop your historically-inspired textile project brief by investigating and evaluating ideas from various historical periods, culminating in a comprehensive portfolio of preparatory work. This portfolio will detail your plans for formal elements, materials, equipment, patterns, construction techniques, decoration, and finishing, all through a historical lens.
Create your historical textile project, applying your design and technical skills. You'll also learn to critically review your work against your project brief, incorporating peer feedback and your own evaluations.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, students should show interest in the subject matter and a willingness to learn.

Assessment methods

Assessment for this course is entirely portfolio-based. You will demonstrate your learning and skills through the production of a comprehensive portfolio of preparatory work and a textile artefact that clearly shows its historical inspiration. This completed textile piece will serve as the culmination of your design and creation process, demonstrating your practical skills and the successful application of the knowledge acquired throughout the course, all while showcasing a clear connection to a historical period or style.
