GCSE English - September Start (Pencoed Campus)

A number of classes are on offer to suit every student including WJEC GCSE English Language, and pre-GCSE English skills.

The September start GCSE English course is scheduled to run on Wednesdays between 6pm and 9pm at our Pencoed Campus. It follows the WJEC exam board specifications where grades A* - G can be achieved.

Overview and modules

The skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening are of vital importance in many areas. Different forms of assessment are appropriate to these different skills. Reading and writing are assessed through two externally marked units. Speaking and listening (oracy) are assessed in a variety of different situations during the course.

The course is designed to assist and develop you with all aspects of writing, reading, speaking and listening in preparation for GCSE English Language.

Entry requirements

  • You will have an informal discussion to assess your current ability level and the most appropriate class
  • Evidence of any previous GCSE English Grade achieved will be required
  • Mature learners without formal qualifications will be accepted at the discretion of the course tutor

Assessment methods

  • Examination Paper: Reading and writing 40% (2 hours) – Unit 2: Description, narration and exposition
  • Examination Paper: Reading and writing 40% (2 hours) – Unit 3: Argumentation, persuasion and instructional
  • Controlled Assessment 10% – Oracy: Responding and interacting (Group activity)
  • Controlled Assessment 10% – Oracy: Individual researched presentation

Continue your studies

Gaining a Grade C or above will enable you to progress to Level 3 study.
