Fashion and Costume (Level 3)

This exciting course has been specifically designed to provide you with a range of skills in this specialist area. Our creative environment will provide you with a realistic and demanding training in concept, design, pattern cutting & making.

Over 2 years, the course enables you to develop your interest in fashion and costume, explore, develop and test your creativity. We will equip you with the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to progress; whether into specialist training, higher education, or employment.

Overview and modules

The course aims to give you a comprehensive introduction to the skills required to embark on a career or progress to higher education in fashion and costume.

It will enable you to develop creative and practical skills using specialist equipment and workshops. You will reflect the day-to-day reality of the industry through project-based briefs and scenarios.

You will learn from highly experienced tutors who will help you develop your design and construction skills. You will get the opportunity to visit industry fashion events such as Graduate Fashion Week as well as inspiring exhibitions and museums. There are also opportunities to take part in exciting live briefs and national competitions.

Throughout the course, you will undertake:

Technical skills such as pattern cutting, garment construction, print design and millinery
Visual studies including fashion and costume design, fashion and costume illustration, life drawing, colour theory and observational drawing
Contextual studies covering contemporary and historical issues in art and design, fashion, costume, business and promotion

Your programme of study

At Bridgend College, your learning programme is designed to enable you to Be All That You Can Be.

The main qualification you will study as part of this programme is the UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Art and Design.

You will also study additional skills qualifications as part of your programme of study. There are 3 pathways. Each pathway will be selected at enrolment and will reflect your current course application, your chosen curriculum area, as well as your previous learning in Maths and English. You could study Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (equivalent to 1 A-Level), GCSE Maths or English, Advanced Studies, or at least one Essential Skills Qualification (ESW) course.

All students will receive tutorials and are required to complete an ESW Employability course in the Success Hub.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, preferably including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted including a Merit at Level 2.
You will be invited to an interview where you will need to bring along a portfolio of your creative work

Assessment methods

A key feature of the course is that assignments and assessments are linked into your practical work wherever possible.

Assessments include garment construction, sketchbook and portfolio work, presentations, reflections on your practice, along with theory and critical writing.

Continue your studies

On successful completion of Year 1, you will achieve the Level 3 Diploma. On successful completion of Year 2, you will achieve the Level 3 Extended Diploma.

Students who have completed this course at Level 3 have been highly successful in securing places at sector leading universities including London College Fashion, Wimbledon College of Arts and Bath Spa University amongst others.

Graduates can go on to work in a wide variety of fields such as fashion design, fashion buying, costume design, costume making, fabric print designing, styling and many more.
