ESOL Entry Level 3 (Evening) - Part-time Semester 1 - Pencoed

This course is designed to help parents who speak English as a second language feel more comfortable when their child starts school. You will learn the specific words and phrases used by teachers and staff so you can stay involved in your child's education. By the end of the course, you will feel more confident talking to the school office and understanding the letters and forms sent home in your child's bag.

Upon the completion of this unit, students will be awarded ESOL: Language for School: Child’s Setting Entry Level 3 from Agored Cymru

Overview and modules

In this course, you will learn about:

Understanding school terms: You will learn what common words mean, such as "inset day," "unauthorised absence," and "excursion."
Reporting an absence: Your tutor will show you how to write a clear letter or email to the school if your child is unwell or needs time off.
Making phone calls: You will practice making phone calls to the school office to report an absence and how to answer any questions the staff might ask you.
Filling in forms: You will practice completing school forms that ask for more than just your name and address, such as forms asking for your comments or extra information.
School stages: You will learn about the different levels of school, such as the "foundation phase" and "key stages," so you know what your child is learning.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, students should show interest in the subject matter and a willingness to learn.

Assessment methods

Your tutor will help you throughout the term and will check your progress through practical activities. You might take part in a role play to practice a phone call, or complete a written exercise like filling in a mock school form. These tasks are designed to build your confidence and make sure you feel ready to use your new skills in real life.

Continue your studies

After finishing this course, you might want to take further ESOL courses to improve your general English skills. This course is also a great first step if you are interested in volunteering at your child’s school or eventually working in a school environment as a teaching assistant or lunchtime supervisor.
