Blwyddyn ryfeddol o fentrau i’r adran Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad

Wrth i’r flwyddyn academaidd ddod i ben, hoffem ddathlu’r flwyddyn wych y mae ein hadran Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad wedi’i chael yn 2022/23.

Gan ddarparu ar gyfer myfyrwyr sydd â diddordeb yn y byd naturiol, cadwraeth amgylcheddol a rheoli cynefinoedd, mae tîm Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad Coleg Penybont wedi arwain amrywiaeth wych o fentrau dros y 10 mis diwethaf. Mae eu hymdrechion wedi darparu amrediad eang o gyfleoedd i fyfyrwyr gymryd rhan ynddynt, gan arddangos yr ystod lawn o opsiynau gyrfaol sydd ar gael yn y maes hwn.

“Cefais fy syfrdanu gan faint oedd y tiwtoriaid yn ymgysylltu â phob aelod o’r grŵp. Er bod 15 ohonom ar y cwrs, rwyf bob amser wedi teimlo fy mod yn rhan o’r sgwrs. Rwy’n teimlo bod tiwtoriaid y cwrs wedi helpu i wneud cwrs diddorol iawn hyd yn oed yn well.”

Harvey Stanislaw, myfyriwr Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad L3

Mae’r rhestr o brosiectau y mae’r adran Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad wedi ymgymryd â nhw eleni yn hir ac yn amrywiol, gan gynnwys monitro llygod y dŵr, cadwraeth cynefinoedd yn Rhondda Cynon Taf, clirio eithin yng Ngwarchodfa Natur Parc Slip, a dod o hyd i chwilen olew fioled brin ar gampws y Coleg ym Mhencoed.

Ochr yn ochr â’r gweithgareddau dylanwadol hyn, mae’r tîm wedi cymryd rhan mewn nifer o ddigwyddiadau a gwibdeithiau, megis taith gerdded elusennol Coed Cadw ar hyd llwybr y Pedair Rhaeadr ym Mannau Brycheiniog a phrofiad gwersylla tri diwrnod ar Fferm Cefn Garthenor yng Ngheredigion.

Mae ein myfyrwyr wedi dangos lefel eithriadol o frwdfrydedd, sy’n brawf o’u penderfyniad a’u hymroddiad i’r maes llafur.

Gyda chymaint i ddewis ohonynt, dyma ddau o’n huchafbwyntiau cadwraeth o’r flwyddyn academaidd hon:

Britheg y Gors

Mae un o’r o’r darnau mwyaf nodedig o waith y mae’r adran wedi’i ymgymryd â hi eleni yn ymwneud â britheg y gors. Mae niferoedd y rhywogaeth yma o löynnod byw, sydd dan fygythiad yn Ewrop, wedi gostwng 79% yn y Deyrnas Unedig ers y 1970au, ac mae ei phoblogaethau bellach wedi’u cyfyngu’n bennaf i dde a gorllewin y DU.

Yng Nghymru, mae ymdrechion cadwraeth ar y gweill i fonitro poblogaethau britheg y gors ac i reoli eu cynefinoedd presennol yn well, gyda cholled glaswelltiroedd corsiog yn ffactor allweddol y tu ôl i’w ddirywiad.

Mae’r Coleg wedi bod yn gweithio mewn partneriaeth â’r Fenter ar gyfer Cadwraeth Natur Cymru (INCC). Ers 2021 maent wedi bod yn rheoli a monitro Comin Llantrisant, sy’n Safle o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig, gan greu cynefinoedd dymunol ar gyfer y glöyn byw a chynnal planhigfeydd o fflora addas.

Ar ben hynny, mae’r bartneriaeth wedi bod yn allweddol wrth adnabod ardal newydd ger Tonyrefail i’w datblygu’n gynefin addas i’r rhywogaeth. Mae ein Gwirfoddolwyr Cadwraeth a’r INCC wedi treulio amser yn ailblannu’r safle, gan greu hafan leol arall i fritheg y gors ffynnu ynddi.

Llysywen Ewropeaidd

Mae llysywod Ewropeaidd yn rhywogaeth sydd ‘mewn perygl difrifol’ yn ôl Rhestr Goch o Rywogaethau dan Fygythiad yr IUCN, wedi gostyngiad eithafol yn eu niferoedd ers y 1990au o ganlyniad i or-ffermio.

Dechreuodd y prosiect ar ôl i aelod o dîm ‘A River for All’, menter sy’n cael ei rhedeg gan Ymddiriedolaeth Afonydd De-ddwyrain Cymru (SEWRT), ymweld â’r Coleg i siarad â myfyrwyr y cwrs Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad Lefel 3. Buont yn trafod y gwaith yr oeddent yn ei wneud gyda llysywod Ewropeaidd a rhywogaethau dŵr croyw yng Nghymru, gan ysbrydoli’r myfyrwyr i arwain ymdrechion eu hunain ar ran y Coleg. Fe wnaeth ‘A River for All’ ddarparu nid yn unig y llysywod eu hunain ond hefyd yr offer oedd eu hangen i ofalu amdanynt.

O ddechrau mis Mai eleni, magodd y Coleg 15 llysywen gan roi cyfle i fyfyrwyr i gael dealltwriaeth uniongyrchol o wahanol gamau cylch bywyd llyswennod. Bydd y llyswennod yn cael eu hailgyflwyno i’r gwyllt er mwyn helpu i gynyddu poblogaethau brodorol.

“Mae’n deg dweud bod y profiad wedi cyfoethogi’r cwrs i’r mwyafrif helaeth, os nad pob un o’r myfyrwyr Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad.”

Harvey Stanislaw, myfyriwr Bywyd Gwyllt a Chefn Gwlad L3, yn cyfeirio at y fenter llysywod Ewropeaidd
