Adult Community Learning Levels Explained

Our Adult Community Learning courses span several levels, including Entry Level 1, 2, and 3, Level 1, and Level 2. Visit our Levels and qualifications explained page to learn more about what level is best for you.

By completing any of these courses, you will be awarded Agored unit credits which can be used towards further study and qualifications.

Stages of progression

Learners can progress through our Adult Community Learning courses. Each of these courses are designed to provide you with the skills needed to progress onto further units or courses.

Entry Level 3 – Beginners

Suitable for any adult who has no prior experience in the subject area.

Level 1- Improvers

Suitable for any adult who has already studied the course at Beginner (Entry Level 3) level. This is equivalent to an E/D at GCSE.

Level 2 – Advanced

Suitable for any adult who has studied the course at Beginner (Entry Level 3) and Improver (Level1) levels. This is equivalent to a C or above at GCSE.

In some instances, we are unable to offer courses at all 3 stages of progression. In this case, we will offer the course at 2 stages of progression:

  • Foundation Level (Entry Level 3 / Level 1) and
  • Higher Level (Level 1 / Level 2)

Further Study at the same level

Our aim is to support all learners to move up the stages of progression on our courses.

For some subject areas, such as maths, English, and digital literacy, learners will often need to study several Agored units at the same level before moving up a stage of progression.

If we offer a follow-on course at the same level, this will be listed as a Phase course.

For example:

  • “Creative Writing: Improvers Level 1 (Phase 1 – Writing to Persuade)”
  • “Creative Writing: Improvers Level 1 (Phase 2 – Writing to Describe)”
