Working Wonders Students Support BBC ‘Give an Hour’ Campaign

18 Working Wonders, business administration students have become digital champions and ‘give an hour’ a week of their time to help local people over the age of 60 to get online.

Working Wonders are offering two classes a week for 15 weeks, with each class accommodating nine students who receive one to one coaching from the students, so if the pupil wants to know how to shop for groceries on-line, this will be the focus of their sessions.

Francis Jones, 74, says “I saw the classes advertised in the Gazette and signed up straight away. The one to one tuition is brilliant. The students are very patient and we have a good laugh together.”

Joshua Lyddon, who has been paired with Francis says “Offering the one to one tuition has been a great experience and good fun. Francis is a comedian!”

Frances James, 77, says “I joined the class because a friend recommended it to me. It’s brilliant that the students are able to help us learn how to do just the things we want to be able to do on a computer.”

There are 8.4 million people in the UK who have never used the internet, with an estimated 6 million of these people over the age of 65, and about 4 million from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The BBC ‘Give an Hour’ campaign encourages everyone to give just one hour to help someone you know get online.
