Welsh Baccalaureate

Welsh Baccalaureate LogoIn September 2005, Bridgend College was one of the first Centres in Wales to pilot the Welsh Baccalaureate.  Since then the number of students involved has grown from less than 50 to more than 450.   The Bac is now offered alongside a wide range of College programmes including Performing Arts, Public Services, Sport, Travel, Animal Care, Health & Social Care, Forensic Science, IT, Administration and Hair & Beauty.

The Bac has been embraced enthusiastically by both staff and students with outstanding student success, with around 90 per cent of students achieving the Welsh Bac at Intermediate or Advanced Level.

It has been particularly successful as it accredits many of the extra curricular activities college students routinely get involved with, such as work related projects, community work, enterprise activities and learning either Welsh or a modern foreign language.

Students lay new stone pathsBac to the Beacons

A group of National Diploma Public Services students spent a week working alongside the National Trust wardens in Brecon, trekking daily up the highest Brecon Beacon to lay new stone paths. More recently they also completed a week's work experience at the Eco Dysgu- Ecolearn Centre, carrying out a range of activities which all served to recognise the importance of environmental protection and sustainability. Bac for a Pamper

Beauty students regularly offer pamper sessions at a range of community venues including local Residential Homes and fundraising events.

Bac to University

The breath of experiences enjoyed by Welsh Bac students is invaluable when applying to University or employment.  Danielle Stokes, BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development and Fitness), was offered a scholarship to the University of Glamorgan as a direct result of gaining her Welsh Baccalaureate at Advanced Level in addition to her ‘Distinction' profile in her National Diploma.
