About our Landbased Studies Department

Grade 1 - Estyn 2009The Landbased Studies department at Bridgend College was awarded a grade 1 in our recent Esyn Inspection.  This means that the department is 'Good with outstanding features'

The Land-based Studies department offers a wide range of courses in:

  • Animal Care
  • Countryside & Environmental Management
  • Equine
  • Horticulture

Courses range from First Diploma to National Diploma to HND level, and allow students to study full-time or part-time around work and/or family commitments.

Many students progress within the Land-based Department starting with a Level 2 course and leaving with a level 5 qualification, and often return to College to update skills as industry standards develop. Many students and external candidates also benefit from undertaking National Proficieny Training Courses (NPTC).

The department also offer the Welsh Baccalaureate qualification with our full-time Animal Care courses, which accredits many of the extra curricular activities students routinely get involved with, such as community work, enterprise activities and learning either Welsh or a modern foreign language.

Pencoed Campus is set within 300 acres of grounds, a large part consisting of a nine hole golf course which is open to the public and used as a teaching resource for horticulture students. Alongside which are paddocks and teaching facilities including our Animal Care Centre, Stables and manége.

Equine YardThese facilities are designed to ensure that students gain first hand experience of their subject areas. Animal care students will handle and care for a wide range of animals from rabbits to snakes, while equine students will work on the yard and horticulture students help maintain the green. Field trips are also key to learning, for example, local farms are visited to assist in agriculture modules and local countryside studied by environmental management students.

Staff are highly qualified and industry experienced. All tutors regularly undertake industry placements to ensure that their knowledge is up to date and relevant.
