The outstanding college committed to your success
Bridgend College is celebrating winning the Mercers' Company Award for Science and Mathematics for its BTEC National Diploma in Forensic Science, which has encouraged greater participation in science-based courses. The Award recognises exemplary teaching on any aspect of Mathematics or Science, or the application of the subjects in a vocational context.
The course, which is open to both 16-19 year olds and adult students, includes units on law, psychology and crime scene photography and students work closely with South Wales Police and the Forensic Science Service on real and simulated crime scenes. They also practice giving courtroom evidence and laboratory work.
The AoC Beacon Award judges said the course successfully switches students on to science as an interesting and relevant discipline and, though most will not end up working in the field, the course is sufficiently broad to form the basis for progression to other areas of study or employment.
The UK-wide Beacon Awards provide national recognition for excellence and innovation as well as acknowledging the talents of staff at all levels. They highlight the breadth and quality of education in the College sector.
Chair of the AoC Beacon Awards, Dame Patricia Morgan-Webb said: "Beacon winners blaze a trail in finding new ways of doing things; they contribute to social justice and are instrumental in local economic and social re-generation, essential during these turbulent times. Whilst the winners this year are located all across the UK, what they all share are the key traits of innovation, creativity, responsiveness and a collaborative approach. I am delighted on behalf of the AoC Charitable Trust to reward the contribution that these Colleges make; they are the pillars of our communities."
Mark Jones, Principal of Bridgend College, said: "We are delighted to win an accolade as prestigious as an AOC Beacon Award, which recognises and endorses the exceptional quality of teaching in Science and Maths and our close collaborative links with partners such as South Wales Police and the Forensic Science Service. This award follows on from a successful HMI Estyn Inspection earlier this year, where Bridgend College was awarded 10 Grade 1's, and which recognised the outstanding quality of teaching and learning across the College.
Bridgend College will host a local celebration event in the New Year and will be presented with their Award by the Rt. Hon. Kevin Brennan MP, Minister of State for Further Education, at a national presentation ceremony due to be held at Westminster in February 2010.
