Access to Higher Education - Social Science and Humanities

Course Description: Access courses are designed to encourage adults to return to education.  As well as studying social sciences and humanities subjects, you develop the skills you need to progress to university to commence a degree in a social science related field such as Criminology, Sociology, Humanities or Behavioural Sciences.

The Awarding Body is Agored Cymru (previously OCN Wales).  You will be taught by a highly qualified team, who between them have a range of related professional backgrounds. 

The graded course is equivalent to three A Levels, which means that you are eligible to apply for university; some courses are highly competitive and you will need to achieve the required grades to be eligible to study at university.  This is a challenging course that is studied either over four days between school times. Assignments and assessments are continuous and much study time is needed.

Each unit is assessed through assignments or projects including formal presentations.  There are no formal examinations; however there are time constrained tests and class based assessed activities.

Entry requirements: There are no formal entry requirements however this is a graded course and good written and study skills are essential.  Previous study is encouraged, e.g. BTEC First Diploma etc  Applicants of under 19 are considered if they have studied ‘traditional’ courses and also have appropriate life experiences, however universities prefer younger applicants to apply after studying traditional BTEC or A level courses

Progression/Career Opportunities: Successful students are eligible to apply for a variety of Higher Education courses including Foundation Degrees, HNDs and BSc (Hons) courses at Bridgend College.
